L'Arche Tahoma Hope

Farm and Gardens Work Assistant

Location: Tacoma, WA

Placement Type: Direct Service

Concern Area: People with Disabilities

L’Arche believes that each person, whether disabled or not, has unique value and the right to life, care, education, and work. L’Arche strives to make known the gifts of people with developmental disabilities, revealed through mutual relationships. The Farm & Gardens Program provides meaningful work in an atmosphere of dignity and respect using horticulture and art to broaden and enhance the unique gifts of adults with developmental disabilities. The Volunteer works with core members (clients with disabilities) to promote solidarity and self-esteem, providing necessary supervision, participating in a semi-annual review of core members’ goals and objectives, and maintaining accurate records. The Volunteer takes part in the work of the farm: planting and tending plants in the greenhouses as well as outdoor field work including tending fresh flowers and organic vegetables. Other activities include papermaking (from recycled paper and dried flowers), and accompanying core members to local farmers’ markets and craft shows to market and sell the Farm & Garden products. Knowledge of farming/gardening is helpful but not necessary. The Volunteer must have a valid driver’s license and be willing (with training) to drive a 12-15 passenger van. www.larchethc.org
