Immigrant Law Center of Minnesota

Legal Assistant

Location: St. Paul, MN

Placement Type: Direct Service

Concern Area: Law and Legal Assistance

The Immigrant Law Center of Minnesota (ILCM) provides quality immigration legal service, law-related education, and advocacy to meet the steadily increasing needs of Minnesota’s growing immigrant and refugee communities. ILCM offers both direct legal representation and brief advice and services to immigrants and refugees in three primary areas: assisting persons with applications for benefits to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service; representing individuals in immigration court; and, when necessary, representing individuals in the appeal process before the Board of Immigration Appeals (BIA) and federal courts. The volunteer screens individuals for immigration legal service program eligibility, including victims of domestic abuse and serious crime, and performs administrative tasks related to those screenings.  Once trained, the volunteer will help train, recruit, and supervise interns to serve as additional intake screeners and provide help with document translation and other managerial projects. The volunteer must be fluent in English and Spanish, familiar with cross-cultural communication, and possess the interest and ability to relate to victims, many of whom are women and children victims of sexual assault and domestic violence. www.ilcm.org
