Compass Housing Alliance

Counselor, Pioneer Square Men's Program

Location: Seattle, WA

Placement Type: Direct Service

Concern Area: Housing and Homelessness

The Compass Center was founded in 1920 as a physical and spiritual response to meet the needs of the homeless, providing transitional and emergency services to homeless men and women. In the Lutheran tradition of caring through serving, the Compass Center offers unique services and structured programs that promote the dignity of each person and leads individuals from homelessness to independence and healthy community life. The Volunteer position is with the men’s short-term transitional housing program, which differs from an emergency shelter by offering a longer stay, more privacy, and more intensive services with greater expectation for participation. The Volunteer’s duties include providing supportive crisis counseling (including reflective listening) and referring to appropriate services, completing intake assessments and orientation to programs, maintaining clear and accurate case notes, providing de-escalation and crisis intervention, and working shifts as assigned by Program Manager. The Volunteer will be asked to work with a variety of populations, set priorities, and manage multiple assignments and changing conditions. Experience or interest in working with people with addictions and/or mental health issues is helpful. The ability to speak and understand Spanish is also helpful but not required. www.compasscenter.org
