Lutheran Volunteer Corps Placements 2003-05

The following is a list of placements that were offered through LVC in the past two years.  Agencies tend to change from year to year, so while many of these agencies will be available, some will not and others will be added.  Job responsibilities also can change from year to year even if a placement remains the same.  A current listing of placement opportunities will be available upon acceptance into the Lutheran Volunteer Corps and will be provided to assist you in the interviewing process.  Note:  Many jobs overlap categories, for instance Bethany Woman’s Center is listed under Women’s Services but also provides housing, day programs, food and case management to homeless women.

LVC has placements in Baltimore, Chicago, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, Oakland-Berkeley, Seattle, St. Paul, Tacoma, Washington, DC and Wilmington, DE.

ADVOCACY/ PUBLIC POLICY

Chicago Religious Leadership Network/ Chicago Metropolitan Sanctuary Alliance - Admin Assistant & Program Project Aide

CMSA provides information about issues in Central America, monitors and responds to human rights abuses and government actions in the region, raises funds and material aid to support grass-roots organizations in Guatemala and El Salvador, and organizes delegations to Central America.

Congregations Concerned for Children – Congregational Organizer

Congregations Concerned for Children Child Advocacy Network strives to be a passionate faith-based voice for children.  They provide advocacy training opportunities for people of the faith community and leadership resources for congregations to work towards prevention of child abuse and neglect.  This position will work to organize, develop and mobilize a base of leaders to advocate from a faith perspective for just policies for Minnesota children, present forums at congregations on faith-based advocacy, and provide resources to advocates.  www.ccccan.org

Disability Rights Education and Defense Fund – Disability Rights Intern

DREDF is a national law and policy center dedicated to furthering the civil rights of people with disabilities. The volunteer will participate in parent advocacy training, assist with legislative advocacy as well as grassroots networking and education, and generally function as a full member of staff. Volunteers with disabilities themselves, or loved ones or friends with disabilities, will find this placement rewarding, as will volunteers committed to civil rights generally.  www.dredf.org

International Women’s Democracy Center – Communications Coordinator

The IWDC was established in 1996 to strengthen women’s global leadership through training, education, networking and research in all facets of democracy with a particular focus on increasing the participation of women in policy, politics, and decision-making.  The Communication Coordinator’s overall task will be to communicate the message of IWDC’s mission to external audiences and to use media-tools to promote women’s participation in democracy.  www.iwdc.org

Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Services DC – Legislative Assistant

LIRS is the US Lutheran Churches’ agency for service with uprooted people.  Since 1939, is has become a broad multi-service and advocacy agency that addresses the needs and rights of uprooted people at local, regional, national and international levels.  The Washington office works to ensure just government policies for refugees and other immigrants through advocacy and education. The volunteer will track legislation, attend liaison and coalition meetings, write public education materials, and assist in writing sign-on letters.  Characteristics needed: interest in working on behalf of immigrants and refuges, interest in the legislative process, excellent writing skills and communication and interpersonal skills, detail-oriented, computer skills, etc. www.lirs.org

Lutheran Peace Fellowship – Youth Trainer/Program Coordinator Lutheran Peace Fellowship is a network of Lutherans that offers a wide range of expertise, encouragement and resources for peace and non-violence to individuals, congregations, regional and national groups.  www.LutheranPeace.org

Minnesota Advocates for Human Rights – Program Asst., Refugee and Immigrant Program

Minnesota Advocates works to promote and protect human rights by documenting human rights abuses, advocating on behalf of individual victims, educating communities on human rights issues, and providing training and technical assistance to prevent human rights violations.  The Refugee and Asylum Project provides legal representation to indigent asylum seekers.  www.mnadvocates.org

National Council Of La Raza - Research Policy Analysis Fellow 

NCLR is a private, nonprofit, nonpartisan organization established to encourage community development to achieve permanent social change and economic improvements for Americans of Hispanic descent.  www.nclr.org

Partners for Peace – Program Assistant

This group’s mission is to raise awareness of the issues hindering peace in the Middle East, to advocate for human rights in that region, and to assist other organizations working on these issues to enhance their media relation skills.  The organization’s main focus is on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. www.partnersforpeace.org

Quest for Peace – Advocacy Coordinator

The Quest for Peace provides material aid for community level development initiatives in Nicaragua.  This includes providing food and other supplies for child care centers, schools, homes for the elderly, health clinics, and community centers.  Quest also has a tradition of political advocacy.  Their current work is focused on assisting communities in Nicaragua to fight privatization of water related services as well as on trade related issues and promoting fair trade.  The Advocacy Coordinator will work to develop and expand Quest’s grassroots outreach and popular education efforts related to U.S. foreign economic policy.  www.quixote.org/quest

 

AIDS/HIV ISSUES

AIDS Foundation of Chicago - Project Assistant

Since 1985, the mission of the AIDS Foundation has been to provide leadership in marshalling public and private resources to care for people living with HIV/AIDS and to prevent the further spread of the epidemic. Aids Interfaith Residential Services (AIRS) – Residential Aide

AIRS provides housing and support services to low-income men, women and families living with HIV/AIDS.

Bailey-Boushay House - Social Work Associate

Meets the long term needs of people living with AIDS by promoting independent living and reducing client hospitalizations, providing quality health care and socialization, encouraging empowerment, and supporting respite care for partners, caregivers, and families.  www.vmmc.org/bailey-boushay

Chase-Brexton Health Services - Case Manager/Outreach Coordinator

Chase-Brexton is a community-based organization that provides affordable primary health care on a non-discriminatory basis.  It provides testing for HIV and access to current treatment and research protocols for HIV positive persons.  www.chasebrexton.org

Health Education Resource Organization (HERO) – Primary Care Clinic Counselor

HERO works with persons infected and affected by HIV/AIDS by providing support services and works to prevent HIV infection through information and education.  The volunteer will counsel and provide case management services for newly-diagnosed HIV+ individuals, newly-released prisoners, and other low-income clients who cannot obtain medical care.     

Rise ‘N’ Shine –  Program Intern

Rise N’ Shine is dedicated to providing emotional support and advocacy to children and teens affected by HIV and AIDS who live with a parent or other close family members with HIV or AIDS, have been orphaned by the disease, or are infected themselves.  Rise N’ Shine children and teens are encouraged to participate regularly and actively in their programs including: the mentor program, peer support groups, residential summer camp and special activities including Birthday and Holiday parties.  www.risenshine.org

Chicago Community Loan Fund – Program Assistant

Chicago Interfaith Committee on Worker Issues - Organizer

Chicago Interfaith Committee on Worker Issues educates and mobilizes the community on issues and campaigns that will improve wages benefits and working conditions for workers in the U.S., especially low-wage workers, and support the role of collective bargaining in a democratic society.  www.nationalinterfaith.org

City South Cluster – Ministries and Services Coordinator

The City South Cluster consists of 6 neighborhood churches collaborating together in a comprehensive neighborhood outreach program.  The position will work with both staff and lay volunteers in the cluster to guide the design, development and implementation of several collaborative ministries.  www.citysouthcluster.org

Corcoran Neighborhood Organization – Community Organizer

The mission of the CNO is to strive to “strengthen, improve and protect the unique character, livability, and social fabric of our neighborhood.  We endeavor to encourage and empower all residents, businesses and property owners to unite in addressing our common issues.” 

Francis X. Norton Center – Activities Coordinator

The Francis X. Norton Center is a multi-purpose facility committed to serving the needs of the diverse population in Wilmington’s West Center City Community.  A major focus of the center is to provide support to the social, educational, nutritional and health needs of seniors residing in this section of the city (particularly those at the adjacent Sacred Heart Village, a Section 202, HUD sponsored residence for low-income seniors).  www.ministryofcaring.org

Metro Seniors in Action - Organizer

The mission of Metro Seniors in Action is to improve the lives of seniors.  They aim to organize seniors in Chicago, to empower themselves through education and advocacy and to fight for the rights of seniors.

St. Mary’s Center – Senior Advocate Organizer

St. Mary’s Center provides services for people with low incomes, for seniors, the homeless and near-homeless, and for families and their children in downtown and West Oakland. Among the services provided are a 5-day per week preschool, senior homeless case management, senior meals, senior-specific drug/alcohol outpatient recovery, emergency winter shelter, community nursing, and mental health counseling. Advocacy is integrated into all of St. Mary’s programs and since 2000, the Senior Advocates for Hope and Justice Program has been working to assist the senior community to address and respond to critical issues that impact their lives. www.stmaryscenter.org

 

EDUCATION

Academy Of Hope - Instructor

In this school the main subject for everyone, teachers and students alike, is not reading, writing or math, but hope.  Adult students work towards their goals of preparing for and passing the GED exam; to further student’s life skills and to achieve a more just society through teaching, learning and sharing knowledge.   www.aohdc.org

For Love of Children (FLOC) – Reading and Math Program Assistant

FLOC’s mission is to transform, by example and partnership, the city’s response to child abuse, homelessness and educational failure so that children are protected and nurtured. The volunteer works with the Neighborhood Tutoring Program. www.flocdc.org

Guardian Angel Child Care Center – Teacher’s Aide/Co-Teacher

The Guardian Angel Child Care Center allows low-income parents to maintain their employment knowing that their children are safe and well-cared for.  In addition, the center offers an array of health care, family counseling, parenting assistance and remedial services are available.  The volunteer works with young children in the Kindergarten classroom. www.ministryofcaring.org

Higher Achievement Program – Assistant Center Director

Higher Achievement believes that talent is everywhere.  Their mission is to challenge under-served 5th through 8th graders in DC to achieve their highest potential for academic excellence and community leadership.  They do so by identifying motivated scholars, connecting them with a Learning Mentor, and teaching them their challenging curricula.  www.higherachievement.org

Holy Family Lutheran School – Assistant to the Principal

Ministry of Caring Child Care Center – Teacher’s Aide

The Seminary Consortium for Urban Pastoral Education - Outreach Associate

SCUPE develops leaders and provides consultation and educational resources for individuals, educational institutions, churches, and agencies that seek to enhance the spiritual, social, and physical quality of life for those who live in the city. www.scupe.com

Shalom High School - Instructor

Alternative School serving at risk youth (ages 16-20) in center city Milwaukee; competency based core curriculum, interdisciplinary focus integral to teaching experience. Assisting students in transition by enhancing their skills, improving their self-esteem and motivation. 

Sojourner Truth Academy – Education Facilitator

Parents, teachers, and community members concerned about the education of students of color in Minneapolis founded Sojourner Truth Academy.  The school provides a rigorous academic and social skills curriculum for students K – 6th.

So Others Might Eat Center for Employment Training – Basic Skills Instructor Asst.

SOME Center for Employment Training offers its students open-entry/exit, competency-based employment training.  SOME offers over 20 programs in addition to the CET that address addiction, mental illness and other root causes of poverty. www.some.org

Citizens For A Healthy Bay - Outreach Program Coordinator

Agency formed in 1991 in response to community concerns about Superfund cleanup in Commencement Bay in Tacoma, WA. Their mission is to facilitate community involvement in cleanup and restoration of the bay. www.healthybay.org

Heart of America Northwest Research Center – Outreach & office assistant

Pesticide Action Network North America (PANNA) – Program Assistant

PAN North America works to replace pesticide use with ecologically sound and socially just alternatives.  Their programs emphasize four essential themes: protecting health, communities and the environment; confronting corporate power and government complicity; promoting sustainable solutions and providing resources for action.  The Program Assistant will assist in correspondence, producing materials, event planning and coordination, research, database maintenance, media outreach, and assisting program and administrative staff.  www.panna.org

The Resource Center - Urban Farmer

The Resource Center strives to discover resources-both human and material-whose value has been overlooked and bring them together in a creative way to make a sustainable project as an element of a sustainable community. Urban Ecology Center – Program Assistant

The center works to preserve, enhance and use the natural resources of Riverside Park, the Milwaukee River, and adjacent green spaces.  It provides nature education for students from schools that serve primarily students from low-income families as well as programming for the general public and life-long learning programs. www.UrbanEcologyCenter.org

Washington’s National Park Fund – Volunteer Coordinator

Washington’s National Park Fund exists to restore, enhance and preserve Washington’s national parks for current and future generations to enjoy with focus on trail restoration, education of natural and cultural resources, visitor experience and park partnerships.  www.wnpf.org

Community Lunch on Capitol Hill (CLCH) – Community Lunch Coordinator

CLCH works with volunteers to provide nutritious meals and inclusive hospitality to low-income and homeless adults, youth and families in the Capitol Hill district of Seattle. Founded by a group of Lutherans in 1985, the CLCH has grown from serving 9 people to now averaging about 180 guests per meal.

Lutheran Community Services – Food and Shelter Assistant

Lutheran Community Services provides housing/loan assistance and emergency food services to low income Wilmington residents.  

Miriam’s Kitchen – Case Manager

Miriam’s Kitchen provides a hot, nutritious breakfast to approximately 150 men and women each morning.  They also provide a range of supportive services to assist individuals in addressing both the causes and consequences of their homelessness.  www.miriamskitchen.org

Neighborhood House – Emergency Services Worker

The mission of Neighborhood House is to “empower all families and individuals to achieve their full potential by providing programs which affirm their own culture; cultivate human relationships across lines of race and culture; and interact with community groups to improve the West Side neighborhood”.  www.neighb.org

 

HEALTH CARE

Responsibilities may include:  Managing a caseload of clients* Assisting clients who have chemical dependency and/or mental health conditions* Address homelessness and physical complications related to HIV/AIDS* Provide social activity programming with groups as well as individuals* Spanish skills helpful (not required)* Work with older adults with physical, psychological and medical problems* Coordinate volunteers and oversee the flow of patients through the agency, willing to take initiative on special projects.

Bread For The City & Zacchaeus Free Clinic - Medical Clinic Coordinator

This agency provides free health care, social services, and legal counsel to low income adults in Washington, DC. 

Cross Lutheran Bread of Healing Clinic - Registered Nurse or Clinic Assistant

The Bread of Healing Clinic is a free medical clinic on the North side of Milwaukee on the lower level of Cross Lutheran Church. Since January of 2000 it has been providing health care to the uninsured, underinsured and those that face other barriers such as socio-economic status. The clinic was created through a partnership between the University of Wisconsin Department of Medicine, Cross Lutheran, and Aurora Health Care.

Elderhealth Northwest - Case Manager

Provides day health care for older adults, helping to maintain their independence at home and in the community, providing rehabilitative services, providing respite for

family members or other care givers during daytime hours, and preventing or delaying the need for institutional care. www.elderhealth.org

Healthcare for the Homeless – Receptionist/Client Services

HCG provides health related services, education and advocacy to relieve the incidence and burdens of homelessness.  Services include medical, addictions, mental health and social services. www.hchmd.org

La Clinica del Peublo – Health Education and Outreach Associate

LCDP is one of very few clinics in DC providing culturally and linguistically appropriate primary care mental health care, social services, comprehensive HIV/AIDS services and advocacy and education services free of charge.  www.lcdp.org

Lifelong Medical Care – Homeless Outreach Advocate/Case Aide

The goal of Lifelong Medical Care is to “promote the long-term health and well-being of people of all ages, origins and races in the East Bay, especially, but not solely, the economically at risk, through providing a continuum of quality preventative and primary health care and social services, and advocating for conditions that sustain a healthy social and physical environment.”  www.lifelongmedical.org

Thunder Road Adolescent Treatment Center – Recovery Counselor

Established and licensed in 1987, Thunder Road is the only chemical dependency recovery hospital and residential group home for youth in California. Its mission is the provision of comprehensive treatment services for youth struggling with behavioral health conditions and related problems with substance use, abuse, and dependency issues. Christian Communities Group Homes – Volunteer Coordinator

This organization provides affordable housing and supportive services to low-income elderly.  Over half the residents have experienced homelessness and most lack family support.  The Volunteer Coordinator helps to carry out the Age-in-Place Home Maintenance Program assisting about 175 seniors to remain as independent as possible in their own homes by recruiting and supervising volunteers to complete tasks such as yard work, cleaning, painting, and small repairs. www.ESM.org

Habitat For Humanity - Family Services Coordinator or Volunteer Recruitment/Relation Coordinator

Habitat for Humanity is an ecumenical Christian housing ministry that helps low-income families purchase and maintain a decent, affordable, and secure home.  LVC works with Habitat agencies in Seattle, Tacoma, Baltimore and Minneapolis. www.habitat.org

Lutheran Community Services - Food And Shelter Assistant

Lutheran Community Services provides housing/loan assistance and emergency food services to low income Wilmington residents.

Redeemer Center for Life – Housing and Neighborhood Advocate

RCFL is an outreach ministry of Redeemer Lutheran Church in the Harrison Neighborhood of North Minneapolis, where 63% of residents live below the poverty line.  Programs include affordable housing, business support and economic development, after school programming, and a technology center.  Volunteer will work to strengthen the relationship between tenants of housing units and RCFL as an institution to support and improve their lives.  www.geocities.com/redeemermpls

Urban Homeworks – Volunteer Coordinator

Urban Homeworks provides affordable housing that is used to build real community.  They rehab boarded and condemned duplexes using volunteers.  Then low-income families move into one unit and young adults move into the other unit. www.urbanhomeworks.com

American Red Cross, Central Maryland – Refugee Youth Coordinator

The Red Cross provides relief to victims of disasters and helps people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies.  The volunteer will participate in a joint project of the Red Cross and the Baltimore office of the International Rescue Committee, which is responsible for resettling refugee families and helping them with housing, job placement, casework, and other services.    www.redcross-cmd.org

English Learning Center - Program Assistant

All People’s Church – Program Assistant
